Tree identification apps – the best mobile tools for Android and iPhone

02/25/2021 by How2forU

Trees are numerous and often similar in appearance. However, trees can also be easily identified via app. We will show you the 3 best tree identification apps for your smartphone.

Flora Incognita

Flora Incognita is a free app available for Android and iOS.

  • With the help of pictures, a tree is identified in this app. The images are either photographed directly in the field in the app or can be inserted into the app at home to determine a tree. Then click on “Search”. After a short time, you will see a result.
  • The app will indicate what type of photo you need to take. For example, shots of the top of the leaf, the fruit, the bark and the entire tree.
  • Besides trees, other plants can also be determined. A total of 4800 plant species are documented in the app’s database.
  • A fact sheet with detailed information is available for each documented plant. You get information about characteristics, such as the distribution area and the appearance.
  • A significant tool of the app is an observation list that you can create and export.

PictureThis – Plant Identifie‪r

PictureThis is an app that is available free of charge for Android and iOS for one week. After that, an annual subscription starts for $29.99.

  • Take a photo of the tree you want to identify. If the tree is recognized, you will be shown one or two possible matches. The app does not specify which part of the tree must be photographed.
  • In addition to trees, other plants can also be determined. Around 10,000 plant species are documented in the app’s database.
  • A disadvantage of the app is that it is not possible to take several pictures of a tree. Only one image is ever used to analyze the plant.
  • After entering a photo, you navigate yourself through the app and compare the tree with other photos from the app.
  • After the plant has been identified, you will receive care and watering instructions for the plant.
  • To make your analyses clearer, you can create an identification list.

PlantSnap

PlantSnap is an app available for Android and iOS. You can use the app for free or take out a premium subscription. This cost $3.99 per month, or $14.99 per year for an annual subscription.

  • Open the app and use it to take a photo of the tree. After a short time you will see the result from the PlantSnap database. The database contains over 585,000 plant species.
  • When you take the photo, the app tells you if the tree is well-placed in the picture. If it is not, change the perspective.
  • You can access and use the app in 30 different languages.
  • In addition to the worldwide distribution of the tree species, locations where the plant was found by other app users can also be displayed on a map.
