The best running and jogging apps for Android and iPhone

01/22/2021 by Anita Sommer

If you like running, you might be looking for an app to support you with your workout and goals. We’ll show you the best running and jogging apps for your Android smartphone or iPhone.

Adidas Running

One of the best running apps for Android and iOS is “Adidas Running”. These features are waiting for you:

  • For athletes who want to track their running and fitness results, Adidas Running comes with handy recording and analysis features. The app itself calculates average speed and calories burned.
  • On the go, you can have the intermediate status announced via voice output and thus improve day by day. An incentive mode is also available, in which the app cheers you on during your workout.
  • You can share your results with your friends on Facebook, Twitter, etc. to encourage each other. You can also use a music player directly from the app, which plays your favorite songs while you run.
  • However, with the free version, you cannot use many features. You can upgrade these individually, or you’ll find them in the Pro version.
  • Especially interesting: Adidas Running offers so-called “story runs”. Here you can include entire stories to your walkout and thus bring some variety into your daily workout.
  • However, it is a pity that the app does not measure the altitude meters achieved or the heart rate during the run. Furthermore, you cannot set an auto-pause via the app.
  • Unfortunately, you won’t find a detailed evaluation of your workout in the app either, but only via the website.

Nike Run Club App

Another popular running and jogging app for Android and iPhone is the “Nike Run Club App”. These features are waiting for you:

  • Speed, distance and the track are recorded. You can also save these under personal best runs.
  • Besides training diary, competitions with other athletes and heart rate tracker, many other functions are waiting for you.
  • You can also create your own plan. This connects your goals with your current fitness level. The plan automatically adapts to your progress.
  • With the Nike Run Club Spotify playlist, you will always stay motivated.
  • What is annoying about the app, however, is that it contains quite a lot of advertising for Nike, since it is directly connected to the brand.

RunKeeper

The free app “RunKeeper” is also available for Android and for iOS. It offers extensive data analysis and various tracking functions.

  • “RunKeeper” works like most other jogging apps with GPS and records your covered distance including altitude and speed.
  • You get statistics here not only about your covered kilometers and your speed, but also about burned calories. The heart rate can also be recorded with various sensors.
  • You can also take photos and share them with other athletes or post activity statistics, training plans and fitness successes on various social networks like Facebook or Twitter.
  • You can save routes in the app and run them again later. Also included in the range of functions are a voice output and the option to be notified of milestones.
  • If you also subscribe to the app “RunKeeper Elite”, you can let other athletes participate in your training session live.
  • Even though the app scores with numerous applications, this unfortunately makes it a bit complicated. The interface could be simpler.

Strava Running and Cycling

Strava is not just an app for running, but also more for connecting athletes. You can get the app for Android and for iOS. You can also use the app for other sports like cycling.

  • Strava offers everything a runner’s heart desires. The app reliably records the distance and time you’ve covered, as well as the distance and speed you’ve reached.
  • The app also has an auto-stop function. This is especially useful in the city when you have to wait at traffic lights. In addition, the app scores with audio feedback during your run.
  • You can also divide your GPS-captured route into segments with the Strava app. Segments can be differentiated by a certain requirement such as a particular climb, for example.
  • The time of each segment is then recorded separately. The app offers pre-created segments. You can also create your own segments. Within the segments, you can compare yourself with other runners in the community.
  • You can find challenges thanks to the community in the app. So you can join groups or challenges.

Zombies, Run

Zombies, Run is a jogging app with a difference and thus quite funny. With this app you will have a lot of fun while running. You can also get this app for Android and iOS.

  • In the “Zombies, Run” app you’ll combine your running with a sophisticated role-playing game.
  • In this one you’ll be in a post-apocalyptic world, where zombies dominate. To survive you have to run and run fast.
  • To bring the role-playing game to life, you listen to a story about this shadowy world through your headphones. But not only that, the approaching zombies are imitated by wild undead howls.
  • However, you can still continue to follow your own playlist if you want to.
  • If you stop your survival run, the zombies will catch up with you, and you will die. So a real motivation to keep running!
  • Along the way, you can explore your post-apocalyptic environment, fortify yourself before a fight with the zombies, and stock up on supplies. With this, you can then unlock new parts of the zombie story at the end of your completed route.
  • The different missions are divided into hidden intervals. The closer the zombies get to you, the faster you have to run.
  • The free version comes with 23 different missions, while the paid version offers you over 200 missions.
Are phone running apps accurate?

In general, running apps are quite accurate, when they use GPS to track your run. Depending on which app you use and how good the GPS signal is, tracking will be more or less accurate. Also, longer runs tend to be tracked more accurately than shorter ones.

How do you carry your phone while running?

To carry your phone safely while running, you have multiple options: choose shorts or leggings that have a pocket for your phone. Also, you can use an arm strap or a running belt to keep your phone safe. Keeping it in your sports bra or holding it in your hand are two popular methods as well, however, we don’t recommend them.

Can I run every day as a beginner?

As a beginner, you should not run more often than three or four days a week. Remember to start slow and work your way up to longer or faster runs. Also, don’t forget to include at least one rest day, with no physical activity, in your training plan.

Is jogging for 30 minutes enough to lose weight?

According to studies, running for 15-30 minutes starts your metabolism, which means that your body will start burning fat during your run. However, it doesn’t stop there, as your body will continue to burn fat even after your training.

Is it bad to run with a phone in hand?

During your run, you should keep your phone in a safe place, like a running belt or arm strap. Otherwise, you might risk dropping it or damaging it if you stumble. Also, the phone will cause a distraction while running, and it may be uncomfortable in your hand. If you plan on running regularly, you should definitely invest in a tool to keep your phone during your run.
