What is “Netflix and Chill”? Meaning simply explained!

  • As the expression implies, the whole thing has something to do with the video on demand provider Netflix. Especially in the USA, the streaming service is extremely popular and widespread.
  • Originally, “Netflix and Chill” meant what it actually says: watch Netflix and relax. Over time, however, the expression has changed.
  • In the meantime, the “Chill” from “Netflix and Chill” stands for sex. A cozy evening with Netflix thus ends in a “little sleepover”.
  • So nowadays, the expression has become a modern day version of “Do you want to come up for some coffee?”

The origin of “Netflix and Chill”

Originally, “Netflix and chill” had no sexual connotation and was based on a Twitter post in January 2009 by “NoFaceNina” (La Shanda Rene Foster). It said, “I’m about to log onto Netflix and chill for the rest of the night.” Soon, the statement became an Internet meme and gained the meaning and sexual connotation it has today.

I’m about to log onto Netflix and chill for the rest of the night.

How to “Netflix and Chill”

“Netflix and Chill” seems to be the modern day version of a booty call. But how do you “Netflix and Chill” without making things awkward? We will tell you how to create a “Netflix and chill” with a guy or girl to remember.

Phrasing the invitation

As the phrase “Netflix and chill” has a sexual connotation, you should make sure to phrase your invite respectfully, yet you can show, that you are interested in getting physical if you want to. However, don’t use the actual phrase “Netflix and chill”. Ask if they’d like to watch a show or movie at your place.

Put the best Netflix & Chill movie on

Maybe you’ve already talked about a particular show/movie. Or tell them you’ve heard about a great show/movie, but haven’t watched it yet. It might start a conversation about the topic and make the invitation process a little easier.

What to wear: Netflix and Chill outfit

For your “Netflix and chill” date, you should be comfortable, yet look nice. You can wear a pair of clean sweatpants or shorts, a shirt and hoodie. Or you can wear something else you personally feel comfortable in. Just remember, you will spend most of the time curled up on the couch together, so a tight pair of jeans or dress may not be the best choice for you.

Netflix & Chill snacks: What to eat and drink

Choose your food and drink selection for your “Netflix and chill” date wisely. You don’t want to be too stuffed or bloated by the end of the night. Also refrain from serving or drinking too much alcohol. A bowl of home-made popcorn and some fresh fruit is a good option. Remember, you can always ask the other person what they want to eat or drink, so you can decide together.

How to “escalate” Netflix and Chill

Don’t put too much pressure on the “chill” part of the date. You may be tired after watching the movie, you may have switched to playing video games and having too much fun with it or you just may not feel like “chilling”. The important thing is for you to spend time together and get to know each other. And if it happens, it happens.
